I moved to Wigan in the late eighties, knowing nothing about rugby. I was very quickly introduced to the beautiful game because I had unwittingly moved near the hallowed ground. On match days, a sea of fans proudly walked past my house. Every street was full of parked cars. At first, I had concerns about bad behaviour and damage to my car. However, I was pleasantly surprised as this was not the case. The fans were great! They resembled a huge family on a grand day out. I didn’t realise that there would be such a big age range. It became evident that they were very different from the football fans that I had experienced elsewhere. From that point on, my opinion changed, and I had a healthy respect for them and the game in general.
