Liverpool is a maritime city in the North-West of England. It has been a major port for trade and migration since the 18th century. It has always had a large mix of nationalities, therefore, a diverse mix of languages. Despite this diverse mixture, Liverpool has a distinct accent.
My father and grandparents are from Maghull. Technically, Maghull isn’t part of Liverpool. However, the Liverpool accent is very strong there. Many people are under the misconception that Maghull and Kirby are part of Liverpool. They are not, I didn’t realise this until I was in my 20s.
This accent is referred to as Scouse. Even this accent changes depending on where you are in Liverpool. In Bootle, the accent is quite soft; however, in Toxteth, it is quite pronounced.

The Scouse accent gained fame during the 1960s, when the Beatles achieved worldwide success. It is also frequently parodied by comedians. An example of this is Harry Enfield in the 1980s.
