Liverpool is a maritime city in the North-West of England. It has been a major trade and migration port since the 18th century. It has always had a large mixture of nationalities, therefore, a large mixture of languages. Despite this large mixture, Liverpool has a very particular accent.

My father and grandparents are from Maghull. Technically, Maghull isn’t part of Liverpool. However, the Liverpool accent is very strong there. A lot of people are under the misconception that Maghull and Kirby are part of Liverpool. They are not, I didn’t realise this until I was in my 20s.

This accent is referred to as Scouse. Even this accent changes depending on where you are in Liverpool. In Bootle the accent is quite soft, however, in Toxteth, it is quite a strong accent.

This Scouse accent became famous during the 60s when the Beatles hit the big time. It is also frequently parodied by comedians. An example of this is Harry Enfield in the 1980s.
